    I have always been told to invest money in a good mattress it may cost you more money but you only get one spine and you need to take care of it the cheaper end mattresses can do more harm than good and give you a poor restless nights sleep.     Great tips here. Personally I use a memory foam mattress which has really helped my back as I get older. I like that it’s not too firm and conforms to your body. I definitely think the old mattress on the floor thing is not a good way to go. Funny how we don’t think how important it is to have a good bed to sleep in until we wake up with an aching back.     I do occasionally get lower back pain, but usually obly after straining it doing some heavy lifting. But my father had very very bad back issues and I worry about getting like him? Can back pain be genetic? I am also thinking of changing mattresses… do you know of any particular brands that you know of which are good for the back? The good ones all look so expensive!

    Mattresses can cause lower back pain. Most people are on a mattress for 6+ hours consecutively, so, if the mattress is not good, it will cause pain. Especially after sleeping on it every night. I remember dealing with some pain when I had a worn out mattress.

    I suffer from lower back pain and find a harder mattress better for me. My osteopath suggests trying to sleep on your side which I find helps get me get a good nights sleep. Great article and site.
